Holiday Tourney Roundup: C-S Girls Win at Union City

SCAA teams took part in numerous Holiday Tournaments over the Christmas break, but it was the Climax-Scotts Lady Panthers that captured the lone crown.

The Panthers bested the Mendon Hornets 48-47 in the finals of the Union City Tournament on Thursday, a day after beating White Pigeon 47-23 in the opening round.

Janae Langs led Climax-Scotts with 23 points, six assists, three rebounds, and three steals, while Fallon Frobert added 11 points and three rebounds for the Panthers (4-1, 3-0 SCAA) in the final.

St. Phil's Takes Class D Title for the Sixth Year in a Row

Sooner or later, the Battle Creek St. Philip Fighting Tigers' unprecedented streak of state championships will come to an end.

If this year's title, their Class D record-breaking sixth in a row, is any indication, it's going to be later.  Much later.

Despite playing with a rotation relying mainly on juniors and sophomores, with only one senior, Megan Lassen, in the regular lineup, the Tigers steamrolled through senior-led teams in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the championship match to claim the title.

It all started on Tuesday at Bronson, where St. Phil's faced Plymouth Christian in a rematch of last year's state final.

St. Phil's Advances to Quarterfinal, NA-J Falls

The Battle Creek St. Philip Fighting Tigers won the Class D Region 25 Championship at Bellevue last Thursday, defeating the Athens Indians in three sets.

The Tigers will advance to the quarterfinal at Bronson, where they will play last year's Class D runner-up, Plymouth Christian.

The Eagles defeated North Adams-Jerome 25-13, 25-21, 25-21 to win the Region 26 championship at Lenawee Christian on Thursday as well.

Katelyn Smith had six kills and Shannen Kittle had five kills and 13 digs for the Rams, who finish the season at 30-12-1.

The quarterfinal at Bronson will take place on Tuesday at 5:00.

Four SCAA Runners Earn All-State Honors at D4 XC Championships

The Division 4 Cross Country State Championship took place this past Saturday at Michigan International Speedway, and four runners from SCAA schools posted all-state caliber performances.

Leading the way in both the boys and the girls races were Hillsdale Academy runners and SCAA Individual champions Joel Calvert and Shaley Albaugh.  Calvert finished 12th overall in a time of 16:35, while Albaugh took 7th in the state with a time of 19:11.

Ruth Letherer of Pittsford also earned all-state honors, finishing 28th in a time of 20:04, a personal best.  Letherer led a Pittsford girls team which had a very successful showing at the state meet, finishing 9th overall out of 27 schools despite having only one senior runner.

Joseph Newcomb of Tekonsha also earned all-state honors for the first time in his career, with a 28th place finish (16:48).

Three SCAA Schools Win Volleyball District Titles

Three SCAA member schools captured district championships last week, and advance to regional play in the Class D State Volleyball tournament.

First to clinch their title was SCAA Tournament Champion and five-time state title winner Battle Creek St. Philip, who soundly defeated SCAA foe Climax-Scotts 25-7, 25-6, 25-8 on Thursday at home in the championship match.

Amanda McKinzie led the Fighting Tigers with 15 kills and 3 aces, while Sierra Hubbard-Neil added 10 kills and 9 aces. Lenae Lesiow had 28 assists for St. Phil's (54-4-2).

Solid Execution Lifts Climax-Scotts Over Pittsford In Playoff Showdown

In nearly every facet of the game, the district final between the Climax-Scotts Panthers and the Pittsford Wildcats was dead even.

Every facet, that is, except for the final score. Though the yardage and time of possession in the game was roughly equal for both teams, the Panthers made more of their opportunities count than the Wildcats en route to a tight 15-7 victory.

"This was a great game between two really good teams tonight," said C-S head coach Kevin Langs. "In close games like these, it's important to make every opportunity count and I thought our guys did a good job of taking what was given to us and not making many mistakes."

St. Phil's Rolls to SCAA Title in Straight Sets

The Battle Creek St. Philip Fighting Tigers once again proved themselves to be a class above the rest of their conference foes, dominating the SCAA Championship Tournament at Litchfield on Saturday to take home a conference title.

The White Division champions plowed through three straight matches without dropping a set en route to their fourth consecutive SCAA Tournament title, including a three-set sweep of Red Division champion North Adams-Jerome in the finals, 25-4, 25-14, 25-19.

St. Philip coach Vicky Groat was pleased with the result, but thought her team could have done better overall.

"A conference title is always an important accomplishment, but you want to win it by playing the best you can," Groat said, after the final. "We lost our focus and our intensity too many times today and it nearly cost us some sets. It's something we have to work on as we move into district play."

The Tigers took out host Litchfield in the quarterfinals (25-7, 25-6, 25-17) and Red Division runner-up Camden-Frontier in the semis (25-11, 25-13, 25-11) to make it to the final match.

Junior Amanda McKinzie led the Tigers' attack with 26 kills and seven aces, while sophomore Sierra Hubbard-Neil added 22 kills and 11 aces to the cause.

However, St. Phil's also found significant playing time for their reserves, a move that Groat hopes pays dividends in the upcoming state tournament.

"It's important for our reserve players to get major tournament experience, because you never know what's going to happen in the playoffs," Groat said. "If someone turns an ankle or gets sick or something else, then you want the person stepping in for them to have that experience to fall back on."

On the other side, the runner-up North Adams-Jerome Rams reached the final with an impressive sweep of White Division runner-up Climax-Scotts (25-20, 25-21, 25-11), but were left unsatisfied by the final result as well.

"I don't know whether we were tired, or nervous, or just off, but we didn't play our best volleyball in the final," said NA-J head coach Darren Kittle. "It's frustrating because I felt we had one of our best matches of the season before that. Hopefully this is a good lesson for us as we head into districts next week."

In the consolation bracket, the Tekonsha Indians beat Waldron in a three set match to top the pool (24-26, 25-13, 25-20).
