The Battle Creek St. Philip Fighting Tigers once again proved themselves to be a class above the rest of their conference foes, dominating the SCAA Championship Tournament at Litchfield on Saturday to take home a conference title.
The White Division champions plowed through three straight matches without dropping a set en route to their fourth consecutive SCAA Tournament title, including a three-set sweep of Red Division champion North Adams-Jerome in the finals, 25-4, 25-14, 25-19.
St. Philip coach Vicky Groat was pleased with the result, but thought her team could have done better overall.
"A conference title is always an important accomplishment, but you want to win it by playing the best you can," Groat said, after the final. "We lost our focus and our intensity too many times today and it nearly cost us some sets. It's something we have to work on as we move into district play."
The Tigers took out host Litchfield in the quarterfinals (25-7, 25-6, 25-17) and Red Division runner-up Camden-Frontier in the semis (25-11, 25-13, 25-11) to make it to the final match.
Junior Amanda McKinzie led the Tigers' attack with 26 kills and seven aces, while sophomore Sierra Hubbard-Neil added 22 kills and 11 aces to the cause.
However, St. Phil's also found significant playing time for their reserves, a move that Groat hopes pays dividends in the upcoming state tournament.
"It's important for our reserve players to get major tournament experience, because you never know what's going to happen in the playoffs," Groat said. "If someone turns an ankle or gets sick or something else, then you want the person stepping in for them to have that experience to fall back on."
On the other side, the runner-up North Adams-Jerome Rams reached the final with an impressive sweep of White Division runner-up Climax-Scotts (25-20, 25-21, 25-11), but were left unsatisfied by the final result as well.
"I don't know whether we were tired, or nervous, or just off, but we didn't play our best volleyball in the final," said NA-J head coach Darren Kittle. "It's frustrating because I felt we had one of our best matches of the season before that. Hopefully this is a good lesson for us as we head into districts next week."
In the consolation bracket, the Tekonsha Indians beat Waldron in a three set match to top the pool (24-26, 25-13, 25-20).
